Is there anything in particular you had in mind...? I haven't been doing much out in the city lately, so I don't have any particularly fascinating stories.

I'll take any fascinating stories! It sounds like you've been here a little while, anything cool happen to you here? Or you could tell me more about your world's zombie problem!

...They're zombies. They aren't terribly bright, they're just reanimated corpses; the virus that caused them spreads easily, and it can jump between species. It infects almost anything, really.

[He shrugs a bit.]

They aren't everywhere just yet. But there are places we avoid, and places we don't go anymore at all if we know what's good for us. That's about all.

Wait, when you say it infects "almost anything" do you mean there are like... zombie dogs? Or is it limited to only turning people into zombies?

It rather tends to like dogs, actually - they're some of the more common animals we see that have been infected. Outside of the expected carriers such as rats and the like, of course.

Whoa, that's... [cool] something I hadn't thought about before. Rats and stuff make sense for carrying it, definitely, but zombie dogs? Definitely wasn't expecting that one. Does it happen to all animals?

Yes, though some tend to die out rather than contribute much to the spread of it.

Huh... People and animals... That's pretty crazy. But it hasn't spread all over the world just yet? I don't really know much about how these sorts of things work, but I always thought zombie outbreaks would like... totally destroy everything pretty quickly.

The possibility of airborne transmission is extremely low - from what we know of it, it generally requires direct fluid transmission in one way or another. So it can be contained, to some extent.

Oh, yeah, I guess I've been thinking of it as airborne, that would explain it! Science isn't really my thing, though, so the specifics of it are a bit beyond me.

Though I am kinda curious... How exactly do people and animals turn into zombies? Does it just sort of happen after they've gotten the virus?

The host dies, in one way or another - generally due to the virus itself inducing an illness that leads to brain death, but there are obviously cases of infectees sustaining an injury that proves fatal. Upon death, the virus "repairs" the host body well enough to regain extremely basic motor skills, and to restore some rudimentary mental function, though not much. They more or less just operate on instinct from there - they aren't people anymore, in any real sense of the word.

[He seems pretty calm about this, but he also doesn't sound uncertain at all; one way or another, he knows how this works.]

Whoa, that's crazy. So everyone who gets the virus is absolutely going to die and end up a zombie? Sounds terrifying.

Do you know if there's any way a cure could be made?

There have been vaccines, but no cure - really, the most to be done for those that have already turned is to kill them. If they're still alive they may have a chance, but if they're already dead there's no point in wasting the resources. It's best to put them out of their misery.

Yeah, I guess that makes sense. I doubt there's any coming back after death. Well, with your mind intact, at least.

Their bodies also deteriorate incredibly quickly once they've been revived by the virus. Leaving anyone in that state would be repulsive at best, inhumane at worst.

Oh, yeah, I kinda figured... That sounds really gross.

How long's it been since all this started? Come to think of it... how did it start?

Apparently a pharmaceutical company was manufacturing bioweapons on the side. The viruses leaked and infected a nearby city, and it more or less went downhill from there.

[So, yeah. Umbrella sucks.]

That was about eleven years ago. It's currently March of 2009, where I'm from.

Yikes, that sounds horrible. So this company somehow managed to make a virus that could turn people into zombies? I mean I guess that could be used as a weapon, but it doesn't seem like a very practical one...

[Like. Do you want the zombie apocalypse, that's how you get the zombie apocalypse.]

Not quite - in the end, the virus wasn't the weapon. The zombies were the weapon.

[He settles back against the wall a bit, casually.]

It would completely change how wars are fought. Imagine fighting against a nation whose army simply can't die - that was the sort of application they were going for.

Oh, so they wanted to basically turn an army of zombies loose on unsuspecting countries? I guess I can get that, no one would know how to fight something like that and it'd definitely mess the place up, if not lead to outright collapse. Still, that's really messed up...

War generally is.

But I suppose it hardly matters to those fighting them, as long as it's effective.

Sorry, I didn't mean for things to end up so depressing. So uh... How've you been enjoying your time here so far?
